چکیده

The elevational distance between two ultrasound images can be obtained from the correlation between the two images, leading to sensorless freehand 3D ultrasound systems. Most of these systems rely on the correlation between patches of fully developed speckles (FDS). Previous work has compared different FDS detectors and concluded that the elevational distance measurement limited to the FDS patches obtained by low order moment test yields significantly more accurate results than other FDS detectors. However, small coherent and FDS regions are spread throughout a typical ultrasound image of real tissue. This makes it extremely unlikely to find a regularly shaped (conventionally a rectangle) FDS patch, making it infeasible to estimate elevational distance accurately. In this work, first we propose a simple and fast algorithm which is capable of detecting arbitrarily irregular FDS regions in an ultrasound image. In vitro experiments on beef liver, beef steak and chicken breast indicates that the proposed algorithm generates remarkably more FDS patches than the current methods. Preliminary results show that the FDS patches obtained by this algorithm generate more accurate elevational distance measurement. Second, we propose a new calibration scheme to generate decorrelation curves. At a particular location in the image, conventional methods acquire one decorrelation curve. We create multiple curves, as a function of particular statistical properties of the patch. The results reveal a theoretically expected relation between the decorrelation curve and the statistical properties of the patch. As a result of this calibration based on the patch statistical properties, improvement in the out of plane motion estimation is expected.

Calibration of an orientation sensor for freehand 3D ultrasound and its use in a hybrid acquisition system

BACKGROUND Freehand 3D ultrasound is a powerful imaging modality with many potential applications. However, its reliance on add-on position sensors, which can be expensive, obtrusive and difficult to calibrate, is a major drawback. Alternatively, freehand 3D ultrasound can be acquired without a position sensor using image-based techniques. Sensorless reconstructions exhibit good fine scale deta...

Robust and Automatic Calibration Method for 3D Freehand Ultrasound

This paper describes a new robust and fully automatic method for calibration of three-dimensional (3D) freehand ultrasound. 3D Freehand ultrasound consists in mounting a position sensor on a standard probe. The echographic B-scans can be localized in 3D, and can be compounded into a volume. However, especially for quantitative use, this process dramatically requires a calibration procedure that...

Calibration of Swept-Volume 3D Ultrasound

We present two different methods for calibrating 3D swept-volume ultrasound as a prerequisite for an ultrasound based intraoperative navigation system. Different solutions of the calibration problem for 2D ultrasound exist, but no approach has been published so far that takes advantage of 3D swept-volume ultrasound. In contrast to 3D freehand ultrasound no compounding has to be performed. Inste...

Image-Based Method for In-Vivo Freehand Ultrasound Calibration

For freehand ultrasound systems, a calibration method is necessary to locate the position and orientation of a 2D B-mode ultrasound image plane with respect to a position sensor attached to the transducer. In addition, the acquisition time discrepancy between the position measurements and the image frames has the be computed. We developed a new method that adresses both of these problems, based...

Sensorless reconstruction of unconstrained freehand 3D ultrasound data.

Freehand 3D ultrasound can be acquired without a position sensor by finding the separations of pairs of frames using information in the images themselves. Previous work has not considered how to reconstruct entirely freehand data, which can exhibit irregularly spaced frames, intersecting frames, nonmonotonic out-of-plane probe motion and significant in-plane motion. This paper presents reconstr...
